The Brooklyn Kitchen and The Meat Hook invite NYC schools to take a fieldtrip to our laboratory kitchen and butcher shop, to spend the day learning about food sourcing, meat and cooking from our incredible staff.
We’ve been educating home cooks since 2006, and we know that the kitchen is a great classroom. That’s why we’re excited to open our doors for the new Classrooms in the Kitchen program to share our passion for responsibly sourced products.We
make every effort to know where our products are coming from, who’s making them and the hands they pass through on their way to us, and we want your students to know why this is so important to us.
What To Expect On Your Field Trip:
Your field trip will start with a tour of our facility and butcher shop, The Meat Hook. Our expert butchers will talk to your students about where the meat comes from, and will demonstrate the (almost) lost art of butchering to older students. Then we’ll get started with a hands-on cooking class, where your students will learn a cooking skill they can use for life. We’ve taught kids how to cook pizza, dumplings, fresh pasta, and seasonal vegetables, and if you have a special topic you want to cover, we’ll do our best to meet your curriculum needs.
Note: It is required for teachers and chaperones to monitor students with allergies or dietary restrictions during the field trip.
Field Trip Details:
We currently offer field trips every other Thursday morning at the Brooklyn Kitchen in Williamsburg. We can accommodate field trips of up to 20 students, from elementary age through high school. Schools must provide their own transportation.
Field Trip Costs:
We ask for a donation of $5 per student, made payable to The Brooklyn Kitchen. If your school does not have a field trip budget or any student is unable to pay, we offer waivers upon request so that all students have an equal opportunity to attend. Your donations help to offset our costs, which are also currently funded in-part through the generous donations of our supporters.
