Hurricane Sandy Update

LATEST SANDY RELIEF OPPORTUNITIES

Updated 11.7.12 @ 11:00am

Because we are a little less able to do upkeep on the lists that follow, ALWAYS CALL AHEAD before making a donation/showing up to help/showing up in a gassed-up car. Read on, be safe and keep on helping!

Check out the Brooklyn Brewery Sandy relief site for info on two great trainings for relief volunteers coming up on November 8th and 13th, as well as their list of resources, donation sites, etc.

Updated 11.4.12 @ 2:30PM

The Brooklyn Kitchen is NO LONGER ACCEPTING DONATIONS and no longer needs volunteers or cars, but MANY OTHERS STILL ARE AND DO!

If you are a DROPOFF POINT/COLLECTION CENTER, e-mail hurricanehelp@thebrooklynkitchen.com with your location, dropoff hours and phone number and we will add you to this site.

I HAVE SUPPLIES TO DONATE:

WINTER CLOTHES ARE THE ONLY CLOTHES BEING ACCEPTED at most sites! Most needed items are batteries, flashlights, baby formula and diapers, cleanup supplies, sanitary supplies/toiletries, garbage bags, blankets, canned/stable food and water. Call first to make sure your destination is still open/accepting donations and is accepting what you’ve got.

I HAVE HANDS AND A BACK AND A BRAIN:

I HAVE A CAR (WITH GAS IN THE TANK):

  • Call any of the numbers from the “SUPPLIES TO DONATE” list above. Any/all of them may need cars to transport their collected donations.
  • Assemblyman Michael Miller’s office needs cars and trucks (with fuel!) to shuttle supplies from their office on out to several distribution points in the Rockaways. You can contact them directly at 718-805-0950.
  • We cannot stress enough that you ought to have plenty of gas in the tank before considering contributing your car. Even the local trips.
  • For anyone thinking of driving directly to the Rockaways:  Please remember that it’s a mess out there. There is debris in the road; stuff everywhere. Most cell service is out. If you get a flat tire, etc., you’re on your own. Everyone wants to help and your hearts are in the right place. Make sure your mind is in the right place too. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Love you guys!  Hope that wasn’t too harsh!
  • If you meet all the above conditions, here’s an incomplete list of volunteer locations. Try to check in with them before you head out – in many cases hours and needs are uncertain.
  • Another map of dropoff, distribution and volunteer locations. Same warning as above.

I HAVE A CAR, I’M PICKING UP SUPPLIES SOMEWHERE ELSE:

  • If you have a full load of supplies and don’t know where to take them, here are some options. Be sure to CALL FIRST to make sure you have what they need.
  • Drop off materials at 83-91 Woodhaven Boulevard, Woodhaven, NY 11421. For questions about the donation drive, please call Assemblyman Mike Miller’s office at 718-805-0950. Miller’s office is distributing goods specifically to several locations in the Rockaways.

  • [Unsure if continuing this week.] Drop off  at 80-00 Cooper Avenue (the former Borders Bookstore site). For questions about the donation drive, please call Council Member Elizabeth Crowley’s office at 718-366-3900. (via Bill DiBlasio)

  • The Red Cross is operating a donation point at Resort World Casino (Aqueduct Racetrack), accepting many types of donations. Click through for directions, needs list, hours and contact information. Goods donated to the Red Cross may be used locally in Howard Beach and the Rockaways, or may be sorted and sent to other areas of need in the region. (via NYPD Community Affairs)

  • Same message as before: For anyone thinking of driving directly to the Rockaways:  Please remember that it’s a mess out there. There is debris in the road; stuff everywhere. Most cell service is out. If you get a flat tire, etc., you’re on your own. Everyone wants to help and your hearts are in the right place. Make sure your mind is in the right place too.

I HAVE MONEY TO DONATE:

If you’re from far away and want to help, please don’t ship supplies. Instead, consider giving to one of the following.

Once again, a MASSIVE THANK YOU to the donors, volunteers and drivers that helped us collect, sort, pack and distribute several tons of supplies Thursday through Saturday.

Whether you volunteered for 10 minutes or six hours, drove six miles or 60, we could not have done it without you. The crew pretty much ran itself while we ran in circles, organizing actual tons of supplies while we figured out where to send it. And all on donated pizza, coffee, and leftover Halloween candy.
Thanks to Tony’s Pizza for feeding our crew on Friday, Allsorts Fabrications for their 20′ truck, Brooklyn Brewery for cartons, and others.
Love to all those impacted by the storm and all those helping,
The Brooklyn Kitchen

UPDATE!!!  11.2.12 @ 5:00pm :

You guys are awesome!

We are at capacity as of now. We cannot accept any more donations. That’s how awesome you are. What we can use is drivers with vehicles that are gassed up to help us get the donations to the Rockaways tomorrow (11/3). If that sounds like you, email hurricanehelp@thebrooklynkitchen.com.

Thank you all so much.

*********************************************************************************************************************************

We hope all of you weathered the storm safely.
The Brooklyn Kitchen & The Meat Hook are open.
Meat and produce deliveries are returning to normal
and classes are happening on a case-by-case basis.
But..
THE ROCKAWAYS NEED HELP
The boardwalk is gone.
111 homes in Breezy Point are gone.
The people there need our help.
We’ve had an incredible outpouring of support and donations in the last 24 hours. Thank you for all of your offers of help, supplies, etc.  Here’s what we’re going to be up to TODAY and how you can help:
We have a a truckload of supplies on the way to several relief centers in Queens right now. We will continue accepting donations through 6pm today (Nov. 2) and will be sorting and bagging the donations for loading later today or tomorrow. See our list (below) of which supplies Rockaway needs most.
At this point, we have more than enough volunteers on site here at the Brooklyn Kitchen. So, now we would like to help you find volunteer opportunities in the neighborhood and across the city.  We will be updating this post with information for donors, volunteers on foot and in cars (with full tanks of gas!), etc., in the coming hours.
Note that we will NOT be directing folks to specific sites or organizing the actual cleanup efforts – disaster relief agencies are well trained in what they do, and we’re not. We all need to remain aware of what we can do to aid in official disaster relief while maintaining our own safety.
Thank you again for your offers and donations.
Please stop by the store by 6pm this Friday and donate any of the following:
IN HIGHEST DEMAND *Shovels *Contractor Bags *Trash Bags
*Gasoline
*Toiletries
*Canned Goods and Can Openers
*Nonperishable Food *Winter Clothing: Jackets, Gloves, Hats, Socks, Boots
*Blankets and Towels *Pet Food
ALSO
Plates
Cups
Bowls
Utensils
Cleaning Supplies
Brooms
Mops
Sponges
Water
Let’s all pitch in & help our friends out.

Harry & Rippers co-owner Chris Parachini are out there with a computer to help people sign up for FEMA relief.
Here at 100 Frost Street, we’re collecting donations of goods
that people in the Rockaways need now and in the future.

UPDATE:  You guys have been amazingly generous.  We just rented a big truck to start taking supplies to the Rockaways. Keep it coming.
I LOVE THIS TOWN!

where can I drop off the supplies? address? Do you need volunteers?

    • annak says:

We are accepting donations through 8pm tonight (Friday, Nov. 2nd). See our updated list at the top of this post for the supplies we need the most!

  2. mkale says:

You can drop off supplies at our store: 100 Frost St. (Corner of Frost, Meeker, and Leonard).

Also, we are accepting volunteers to help us organize all of the donations.

And, if anyone has a truck with gas and wants to join the caravan travelling to The Rockaways, we’d love the help!

Do you know if people out there need warm baby clothes? I also have kids books and some diapers as well as other items on the list.

    • Sven says:

What time will you leave on Saturday?
I’ve got a truck and gas, let me know.

      • mkale says:

  3. john says:

Any plans to broaden the outreach? There are more neighborhoods along the shoreline that need help just as bad. Coney, Gerritsen, Far Rockaway, etc.

    • annak says:

Hi John, we know there are lots of people out there who need help, but not being a full time relief organization, we do not have the space or manpower to broaden our efforts. People have been beyond generous so far with their donations, but we can only coordinate so much. If anyone out there knows of other organized efforts, post them here. We’ll link it.

    • WAGPOPS! says:

PS 84 (Grand and Berry) has adopting The Waterside Children’s School PS 317 in Far Rockaway. The students and staff have been deployed to a nearby High School. The school and the families are devastated. Families need school supplies, food and clothes. Please spread the word and bring donations to the lobby M-F, 7:30am-5pm.

I am involved with an organization upstate that donates hand knitted blankets to people and groups in times of need. Do you accept donations by mail ?

    • annak says:

Sorry, Kristin, but we are unable to coordinate mail-in donations at this time. We’re only big enough here to handle in-person donations. Please try the Red Cross or another full-time relief organization.

Hi! We have an SUV (not a truck) so could help bring supplies and whatever else is needed this weekend (hoping to be able to refuel before tomorrow).

  9. mf says:

I just got back from dropping off donations, you guys are amazing!! Just wanted to post an update for people who want to help: It seems like they are now in need of boxes/crates/etc to pack together all the canned food and cleaning supplies, so if you have any old moving boxes or milk crates, bring them by!

Is there any chance there is a drop-off point in Manhattan?

    • annak says:

Sorry, Chris. But our location is only in Williamsburg. We made it out of the storm comparatively unscathed here and want to do what we can to help people her were less lucky than us.

Are you planning on organizing another one of these?

    • mkale says:

All the help the past few days has been staggering. Plans here are changing constantly, but right now we do not have a definite answer on when we will be able to start up again. As soon as we know more, we’ll update the blog post.

A few Californians would like to have a neighborhood clothing drive this weekend but are having trouble finding a location to have it shipped to. Will you accept a shipment next week or do you know of any places that will take a couple of boxes of clothes, bedding, etc. via FedEx? Short on cash but really want to help in some way…

    • mkale says:

Unfortunately, we cannot accept shipped donations to the store.

    • Hurricane says:

      Christina,
At the moment, clothing is not being accepted by most of the relief agencies. Your heart is definitely in the right place, though. If you already collected clothes, get them to family shelters or others in your neighborhood. If you’d like to make a dent here from afar, look into donation opportunities with groups like the Brooklyn Community Foundation and others. Your thoughts are appreciated.

  20. VN says:

Will you be accepting donations tomorrow? We also love to volunteer for a few hours tomorrow if possible.
    Thank you!
    Vida

    • mkale says:

Currently, we are not accepting anymore donations until the store is empty of what we have. The focus needs to be on getting this stuff out to the Rockaways. You guys did great on Step 1, now it’s time for Step 2. Bring your muscles to the store from 10am – 4pm tomorrow and help us load this stuff into trucks!

  21. Liz says:

Are there any other donation centers close to you? I came by with donations, but you are at capacity! Thanks!

  22. Richie says:

Are you still looking for delivery drivers for tomorrow?

    • Hurricane says:

We’re no longer looking for delivery drivers ourselves, but check the most recent updates to this blog post to find people who are. Look at the list of donation sites, call each and ask if they need a driver. Be safe!
